Should You Switch To Single Mattresses?

As people age, they have more difficulty sleeping. Health conditions can appear that make sharing a bed uncomfortable or impractical. Even though you have shared a bed with your spouse for many years, there may be reasons to sleep in separate beds as you age. If your spouse has health problems or their sleeping pattern has changed and now interferes with your sleep, it may be time to consider two single mattresses instead of a shared bed.

Sometimes as we age we become restless sleepers and kick and punch during sleep. If this is a problem, it’s not a good idea for spouses to share a bed. The actions are involuntary, but can still lead to injury. A spouse sleeping in the same bed with a person with a condition like this cannot get any quality sleep and risks being injured. Two single mattresses allow spouses to share a room without having to sleep in the same bed.

Other health conditions may require a person to use oxygen. No one who is using oxygen should share a bed with another person. There is too much chance of the other person becoming tangled in the equipment and cutting off the oxygen supply. A person using oxygen may have to remain in a partially elevated position while sleeping. This can be uncomfortable for anyone sleeping in the same bed.

There are other health problems which may require that one spouse have their feet elevated during sleep. This can be a problem for a spouse sleeping in the same bed who doesn’t have the same condition. For spouses with different medical problems requiring different adjustments for sleeping (perhaps making use of an adjustable bed, sharing a bed can be completely impractical. Single mattresses allow each person to make whatever adjustments are needed.

It can be difficult to make the decision to sleep in separate beds after you have shared a bed for many years. In most cases, single mattresses will allow you to continue to share the same room, even if you are in separate beds. A single mattress will allow each person to get a good night’s sleep without disturbing their spouse. Each spouse can adjust their bed for their own health needs.

If you are having conflicts sharing your bed, speak with your medical professional and see if he recommends separate beds. You can still share a room and be close to each other while taking care of your individual health issues and getting a more restful sleep.
